Beginning July 1, 2026, Medicare beneficiaries may have access to significantly lower costs for certain GLP-1 medications through a new CMS initiative called the GLP-1 Bridge Program.
For many people, GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy® and Zepbound® have been financially out of reach — often costing more than $1,000 per month. The new program aims to improve affordability by offering eligible beneficiaries access to approved medications for approximately $50 per month.
What Is the GLP-1 Bridge Program?
The GLP-1 Bridge Program is a new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) initiative designed to expand access to weight management medications for qualifying Medicare beneficiaries.
The program serves as a temporary “bridge” ahead of the future BALANCE Model and is currently expected to run through December 31, 2027.
What Medications Are Included?
Current medications expected to participate include:
- Wegovy®
- Zepbound® KwikPen®
- Foundayo®
CMS may add additional medications over time.
Who May Qualify?
Eligibility may include:
- Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Part D
- Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with prescription drug coverage
- Certain dual-eligible individuals
Participants must also meet medical and prior authorization requirements established by CMS.
How Does the Program Work?
The process is expected to look like this:
- Speak with your doctor
- Your provider submits a prior authorization request
- CMS reviews eligibility
- Your prescription is approved and filled
- You pay approximately $50 per month
Important Things to Know
Before enrolling, beneficiaries should understand:
- Prior authorization approval is required
- Clinical eligibility guidelines apply
- Program copays may not count toward Medicare out-of-pocket maximums
- Availability may vary by pharmacy and participating plans
